Finding a good Indie game on Xbox Live is tough, but from time to time
one jumps out at us. Avatar Legends jumps out, with distinction, to
deliver a surprising amount of content for a mere 240 MS points. From
developer Barkers Crest, Avatar Legends is an action RPG using your
Avatar as the main character and other random Avatars as the characters
in the game. It’s a silly story, a light hearted parody of your standard
RPG, but the dialog options are well written and plentiful.

The main story mode has everything you would expect from a retail or
XBLA RPG. Levelling up, shops, a quest tracker, on screen notifications
of completed and added quests, a mini-map, day/night cycles, the list
goes on. The fighting is simple, X attacks, hold X for a power attack
and Y fires off an equipped magic spell. Avatar Legends is a lot of fun
for a little amount of money.

Avatar Legends steps it up with full online multiplayer. Grab up to
five friends and play through one of the ten included multiplayer maps,
which offer a few waves of bad guys, or head over the Map Editor and
build your own custom experience to share with your friends. That’s
right, on top of everything else, Avatar Legends offers a map editor so
you can build you own maps, with a ton of options, and put a custom
amount of bad guys in. Share these maps with your friends and build up
your character together. Another really cool thing was the way Barkers
Crest gets around the lack of achievements allowed for indie games. The
game features unlockable ‘Titles’ that pop up in a similar balloon to an
achievement. Nice touch.

There is a lot to sift through in the Indie Games section, but
Barkers Crest has redeemed the lot with a truly fun game that’s a huge
steal at 240 MS points.
